Two Maps, Two Homes
2024
Some questions I ask myself:
How are the maps of the places we live a reflection of ourselves?
Do I map to find reason?
Why do I desire a map of the place I know like the back of my hand?
What can a map offer beyond direction?
This quilt references two significant maps; my home in Seattle, and my home in Providence. Through an investigation of identity in relation to landscape, I began to consider the ways I could represent the places I have lived through color, texture, and abstraction. Using hand-dyed cotton fabric and found fabrics from my home, I pieced a map that combines these places of importance, intersecting one street into another.
This project was just as much about the process of making, as it was about a finished product. I physically connected these two places to one another, in a time when they were feeling very disconnected. I constantly feel pulled in two directions, two places at once. Two Maps, Two Homes brought Providence and Seattle together, for me to sleep under every night.
