Modulated Sweater
2024
Wool, mohair, wool blend yarns

We observe the passage of time in many ways. Paint chips away from the elementary school monkey bars. Moss grows on railings, and barnacles cover sea walls. The hardwood floors settle in old homes, turning our homes into a landscape. Train tracks line the ocean, worn away by saltwater.

This summer, I became fascinated with a strip of stone along a seawall. It had likely once been completely smooth, but after years of water flowing over, the rock began to develop little dimples. Each of these dimples was lined with a thin red orange circle, a mineral deposit. I started to look for visible signs of age everywhere. Some things wear away and become weakened with time, others grow stronger. Time is simultaneously both subtractive and additive.

This sweater was inspired by a photograph of an old bridge overpass in rural Canada, rusted red and oxidized to a beautiful green. Reminiscent of popular outdoor clothing, the sweater is modulatable, with a series of pieces that can be removed or resituated in different ways through the use of snaps. The interchangeable quality of this sweater allows the wearer to visualize how it may serve different purposes, evolving throughout its lifetime.
